And now … The Top 5 Ugliest Bags!
November 28, 2006 by Designer Ella
Following our Holiday Gift Week series, I still have at least one gift to write about.
One source of an assortment of fashionable gifts for women is Dooney & Bourke, and their various accessories. Dooney & Bourke wristlets are cute for girls, especially the more colorful ones. For adults, they have nice - more sophisticated - accessories and bags, too. Like Coach, Dooney is a more affordable luxury brand.
Their Flap Wristlets, like this Doodle Wristlet shown, cost $45. That’s a great price considering some other pricetags these days. And teenagers often only need a wristlet as an entire bag, so depending on what you pick for whom, a D&B gift is a great one.

Dooney & Bourke banana and saddle bags: no, this is not the start of a fashion joke. It seems the brand has finally made a couple of nicely shaped handbags. The styles come in leather and all of their new logo prints (which are mostly horrid in themselves).
The new pocket bags are roomier than the old pocketed designs. The saddles have 7 outer pockets, alone! (And there are still zippered, cell phone/multi-function pockets, inside!) The 2 styles come in 4 sizes, total.
Especially nice is the vintage leather; also the denim signature is not bad, if one cares for sporting a Dooney logo. Unfortunately, the website doesn’t offer images of all the colors for each bag, and department stores haven’t picked up any of these shaped bags, yet (Doodle, galore, though). How do I know whether to invest?

Mallory Road:
I think the new line of “Doodle” handbags from Dooney & Bourke are named quite appropriately. My problem with the design is that it looks like you purchased a purse and used it as a writing board. If I’m spending between $100 to $300 for a handbag, I do not want it to look scribbled on! Actually, it doesn’t matter what I spend on the purse, I don’t like the look. In fact, I specifically try to protect my purses so they don’t get scuffed or marked. The shapes of some of these bags are great, but, in my opinion, the pattern does nothing for them. So, Designer Ella, what’s your opinion?
DesignerElla:
I think they they took all of their recent logo prints, mixed them in a blender, fed that to a dog, and it was so disgusting, she vomited on these nicely shaped bags. One step forward, two steps back!

Dooney & Bourke has a new collection, Signature “Quilt.” Yes, the name actually includes quotation marks, because the quilting is really just a flat pattern. It’s not completely ugly, though, in fact it’s a bit cute. But it doesn’t say quality, when competitors have actual, lush quilting on their bags. That being said, I’m not a fan of that, “old lady look,” and I kind of prefer the Dooney, in a way. This small hobo is attractive, and I love a detailed strap.
