6 Reasons to Buy Fakes, & Arguments Against

November 13, 2006 by Designer Ella

You might want to buy a fake because …

  1. Designers’ prices are ridiculously high for reasons of faux exclusivity, greed and well, just because they get away with it! They don’t deserve all those riches.

Counterfeit LV bagBut counterfeit sales lower the profits to the legit companies, which means they might just have to raise prices. This loss of actual product sales, sourcing customers elsewhere and certainly people thinking fakes are authentics (and therefore thinking they cost less) could mean a degrading of the company image, and sometimes companies raise prices to boost exclusivity.

Also, the money you are spending doesn’t go to hardworking and talented craftsmen, creative - genius - original / envied - idea - designers and other employees, it goes to greedy get - something - for - nothing - ers / cut - corners - with - poorer - quality - work - by - child - labor - ers — but what’s worse, is it’s said to help terrorism and organized crime (true!).

Then there’s the question of whether or not the designer bag is worth the money—status left out. That won’t be discussed here, but everything about the fake bags are fake; the logos don’t represent the real thing and the leather is fake. Really, the bags fall apart, and you lose money in the long run.

Bottom line: The existence and popularity of fakes may just be what causes designer bags to be so expensive in the first place! Vicious, vicious cycle.

  1. There are some great, convincing fakes out there. No one will tell, especially since with many bags and designers, people assume they’re all fake! I don’t want people to assume my expensive bag is fake, let me fool them the opposite way.

People can tell! The people who assume authentic bags are fakes are kind of snobby, and if yours is fake, all the experts will know it, too.

And if you don’t want the bag so famous that people assume its fake, go for a low-profile design.

  2. I don’t care about name—that’s so silly. But I admire a certain style, why not go fake?

Well, that name created that great style, so you do admire the designer’s work, right? There are always lesser-priced “inspired” bags at mall stores (never go for hall carts, some malls have fakes there) that have elements of the designs, without fully copying them.

  3. “But I can’t afford it without going horribly, stupidly broke—and why should the rich be allowed this luxury and not the normal woman?!”

Try researching authentics, getting some help through forums and scouting a deal on eBay, or getting mall store “inspired” bags, or just quality leather bags for under $100 at outlets.

Then you can also save for that one great IT bag or designer, or work odd little jobs for your bag fund.

I’m not going to say that spending money that you don’t have on bags is stupid, oh no, not on this blog. I’m with you.

  4. I don’t want to spend so much on a bag when I’ll be sick of it in two months. I’ll just buy fake.

But it’s not a good investment buying fake bags, in fact it might be worse buying fake bags than buying expensive ones and then selling them on eBay to fund for a new bag. What will you do with the fake after that month or so is over and you want a new one? You have to abruptly stop before you ever think about selling it—it’s illegal. Yes, it’s illegal to buy a fake handbag, too! That’s a great reason on its own.

  5. I want to make an easy buck and sell fake bags after I buy them. I’ll get away with it, too.

Maybe you will, maybe you’ll trickily dodge eBay and never have a VeRO or law enforcement go after you. I’m not an expert on justice, by far. But what you’ll be doing is the same thing as any other crime. It’s wrong, against the law, and it’s dangerous. Refer to point 1 and remember where you get your supplies at some point helps “worse” (or just more dangerous, perhaps) crime and even terrorism!

So there you have it. Do you still have any reason to buy a fake bag? Leave your comment, and we’ll see what the anti-fakes have to say!

Think. Be original. Buy original.
